I AM A AUTO EXPERT IN OLDS BUICK CATAGORY.USED TO RACE STOCK CARS FOR CPL YEARS.NOW OLDER AND CONCIDDERING A LATE MODEL.ANY RECCOMENDATIONS ON CHASIS ENG REAR ENDSHOULD I BUY A ROLLING CHASIS BUILD ONE WHAT.I KNOW THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE TASK SO I NEED TO DO IT AS ECONOMICAL AS POSSIBLE ANY SUGGESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRICIATED.TY FOR YOUR TIME...BILLYMAC

Hi Billymac:

The cheapest way to get back into racing in any class or category is to buy a used race car from a competitor who is moving up.

Building from scratch is the most expensive. I know this because I've done both.

As to engines,  stay with Chevrolet, they're so popular it just simplifies a lot of things like parts availablity, experts you can draw information from, and availability of blocks and cranks for when you blow one up.

I can't recommend a transmission, because I'm not a stock car person.  All my race cars are for road racing, and 5 speeds are what we use.  I believe some stockers use highly modified Powerglide trannys, and I know nothing about them at all.

Most racers, regardless of their class or car, use the Ford 9" rear end. It's tough enough for the Nextel Cup guys, and nearly anything else that comes along.  The Nextel cars are approaching 800 horsepower these days, and you almost never hear of a rear end failure.

Experience

I have been racing for 20 years, I have been the Central Florida SCCA Regional Championship points for 5 years running, and won the championship in my class 2 times. During my first start in the 60's I won many solo awards and the State Championship Drags. I serve as a senior instructor for SCCA, and have taught in Mercedes AMG events at Daytona, and Dodge Viper Days at Sebring International. I have been in the thick of the competition for all of my career. At one time or another I have driven race cars at speeds nearing 195 MPH. It's quite a ride !
