Expert: INSTALLSUPPORT - 9/17/2007

Question
I have a 1998 GMC Sierra k1500 with the 350 5.7 Vortec Engine.  
We put a new short block and heads in it and have everything put together. The truck wouldnt crank because of a dirty ground or something stupid like that(which has been fixed) so we ran a jumper wire from the starter to the battery, turned the key to the on position and tried to start it that way. The truck ran one time fine and we shut it off. Now the truck will fire right up for about a second or two and shut right back off. I was recently told that it sounds like i have a antitheft problem. And i have no idea how to try to reset this or what i need to do. Do you know of anything, and do you think that we triggered the system or was that faulty advice?

Ok, It appears you've reset the VATS.
The car does not recognise the chip in the ignition
key anylonger. You can try to put the key
in the ignition, turn to the on position & wait at
least 10 mins like that.

In some cases, the VATS (GM'S VEHICLE ANTI THEFT SYSTEM)
will re learn the code this way, and will then
allow the restart. But if this does not work,
then you can simply tow it to any GM vehicle dealer
to have the service department re code it.
