Question
I just recently got a 01 chevy malibu and went to leave for work, put the key in the ignition and the car wouldn't start. So I did the wait 10 mins and it started. Well I had it happen to me again for the second time this week. I was wondering why it keeps doing this and how i can fix it? Just the other i day i drove it to work and the theft light stayed on but when i went to restart it, it stayed off. If you have any answers it would be very helpful. Thanks.

Ok, It appears you've reset the VATS.
The car does not recognise the chip in the ignition
key when that happens. You can try to put the key
in the ignition, turn to the on position & wait at
least 10 mins like that when it happens. But
after awhile, it will stop working at all.
The intermitency points to the 6 year old
ignition switch assembly in many cases.
This know problem may be to blame for your
situation as well.

In some cases, the VATS (GM'S VEHICLE ANTI THEFT SYSTEM)
will re learn the code this way, and will then
allow the restart all the time.

But if this does not work,
then go to any GM vehicle dealer
to have the service department evaluate the issue,
& re code-reset the system.
