Auto Theft Prevention/2003 Malibu anti theft activates at times
Expert: INSTALLSUPPORT - 8/18/2007
QuestionQUESTION: Why does my anti theft system activate at times? I then have to wait 10 minutes with the key in the ON position till it stops flashing. This is dangerous for a single woman to have to wait in a stalled car that won't start.
ANSWER: Ok, It appears you've reset the VATS.
The car does not recognise the chip in the ignition
key anylonger. You can try to put the key
in the ignition, turn to the on position & wait at
least 10 mins like you've been doing.
In some cases, the VATS (GM'S VEHICLE ANTI THEFT SYSTEM)
will re learn the code this way, and will then
allow the restart, and retain the key code.
But if this does not work for you, and it is
constantly happening, then you should go to any
GM vehicle dealer to have the service
department inspect the system & re code it.
Sorry, it's a GM issue lot's of folks have to
deal with.
Luck with it.

QUESTION: I took my key to the Car Dealer, parts dept and they examined my key and looked it up and this model car does not have a computer chip in the key. He said the Malibu's has problems with the cylinder? I haven't gotten it repaired as yet
AnswerOk, let's try an experiment.
Go to the local home depot and get a
key made. Then try to start the car.
Here's what I know.
This is a transponder based, fuel injection
cut out system that GM uses:
Anti-Theft Type UNIVERSAL TRANSPONDER
Anti-Theft Descript THE KEY SENDS A RF SIGNAL
TO THE BCM THROUGH A ANTENNA AROUND THE KEY
CYLINDER
and have used in this car & for all of
the 2001 + Malibu's.
Ok, here's the testing part...
If the key you have made for 2 bucks starts the
car, then I and all of the databases I use here and
write for, are wrong.
If it does not start the car, then please go to
another gm dealership and have them look it up
again. This car is a GM product. They have been using
three types of key immobilizers for many years.
Yours was not an exception according to our notes.
Check it out a bit more before going to the
$$$ expense.
