Auto Theft Prevention/Jeep Factory Alarm goes off randomly
Expert: INSTALLSUPPORT - 1/13/2008
QuestionQUESTION: I know you've had very similar questions, but I didnt see any exactly like my problem, but feel free to refer me if I'm wrong...
I have a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and the alarm has gone off randomly 5 times tonight. I installed a different radio about 3 years ago, and just recently had to access the back of the radio to install an ipod adapter. Also, just today I drove it more than it has been in a long time (360+ miles). Do you think either of these things could be the cause since tonight is the first time I have noticed this problem?
After the last time the alarm sounded, i turned it off, locked the car, and tried disarming the alarm by using the power lock and then using the key to unlock and relock the door. This time the security light didn't stay on after the inside lights turned on, does this mean the alarm is disarmed?
I saw in a couple places you mentioned splicing the purple/yellow wire to deactivate the alarm permanently. Can you give any more instruction on this as I'm a little uncertain about what you mean. Do you cut the wire and add a new one that is grounded? or could you take the insulation off and then attached the grounded wire? Lastly, where is there a good spot to attach the wire to ground it??
Thanks so much! (from me and my new neighbors!)

ANSWER: Please be more specific.
I need to determine whether it's a factory alarm
issue or, if it's an aftermarket system you are
dealing with.
Is it: Headlights flashing, car horn honking
and a worded SECURITY" light in the dash flashing?
(doubtfull since none of the notes show this
car as having a factory alarm system)=FACTORY
Or,
is it: flashing parking lights,
an LED in the dash area, and a siren
going off?= AFTER MARKET
Let me know more on this to better
advise you on a course of action
to take.

QUESTION: Sorry about that; yes it is the factory system, so its headlights and horn going off. I'm not sure if the "security" light is flashing while it's sounding because I'm in a rush to find the correct key and turn it. I've seen some sites where people say that turning the key in the driver side door doesn't work to get the alarm to stop going off, but it has worked for me every time so far.
Thanks and let me know if you need anything else!
ANSWER: Ok, if it's factory, do this:
Find the purple/yellow located in the
drivers door jamb harness, in a 14 pin
black plug at the BCM located between
the steering column and the drivers kick panel.
Once Located, splice into this wire with
a simular guage wire, and put it to
a solid chassis ground. Make your own
grond point, or find a wire bolted
to the body under there, splice into
it and tape off. This terminates
the OEM alarm functions entirely.
See if it corrects the troubles.

QUESTION: I'm having some trouble finding this wire. I did find a wire that is purple and yellow, but was unsure if "purple/yellow" meant that purple was the main color or not. Since I dont know the correct nomenclature, I will write "primary/secondary" where the primary color is the main color and the secondary is the color of the thin stripe.
Does it matter where you splice the wire?
I dont know what the BCM is, but I didn't see a black 14 pin plug (at least not a plug that had 14 wires going to it). I saw a couple black boxes that had multiple plugs going to them; (A) one velcroed kick panel labeled "wiper", (B) one between the steering column and the kick panel, (C) one that appears to be more of just a connector between 8 wires on either side, and the last one (D) just to the left of the driver's left knee.
The (B) box is bolted down and has 2 white plugs that have about 14 (was hard to get to it and count) wires going it each in a single row. It's hard to tell with the light i have, but there appears to be a purple/yellow wire going to one of the plugs, 2nd from the right of the plug. To the right-most wire is green. As I said, it was hard to determine the color for this one, so it may have been brown/yellow...
The (C) connector has a Yellow/purple wire going to it.
The (D) box has a couple black plugs going it, and there is a purple/yellow going to one of them. The plug with this wire has about 7 wires going to it, most in a single row, but there are a couple spots that had a wire of the same color one row below.
Am I missing something, or does one of these sound right? Could you possibly describe the BCM more or if there is any other way to identify it?
Thanks!
AnswerThe wire is purple with a yellow stripe, and
can be found in the door jamb, rubber boot.
The BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) is a wire juction box.
you'd need to look at a Chiltons manual for a description
as my fort'e is in disarming them using a specified wire,
not in where the modules are unless the notes give specifics.
These notes are saying the module is
to the left of the under steering column.
That's where I'd catch it if it were me.
Splice into it where it can be easilly grounded.
The wire is in the location specified. Please try
to identify it again, or grab a
Chiltons manual, and work with it in front of you.
I'm limited to my notes on the subject, and only
have that info because we need to address it for
installing car alarms, keyless entry & remote
starters in the shop.
Keep working on it.
