Auto Theft Prevention/PATS Intermittent Problem
Expert: INSTALLSUPPORT - 10/1/2008
QuestionI have a 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII. Perfectly good and pristine. I am having an intermittent start problem. It seems PATS sometimes recognizes my key and sometime it does not. I have had at the dealer and they tell me I need these 2 parts (PATS antenna and LCM) for over $1000 and better yet the one is not available in the US. Anyway,
Will any of these transponders bypass kits work?
If so, would I have to install an entire remote start kit? At this point I do not care if the anti-theft no longer works.
Do I need a ‘good key’ for this to work or to program one of these kits? The dealer told me that they tried to re-program my keys but could not because of these 2 other parts. I am not sure that my keys are even valid anymore and hopefully did not wipe out my original keys?
I am just looking for something that will start the damn car
Thanks,
Gary

Not good.
Troublesome system, and not an uncommon issue
by a long shot.
Ok, unfortunately, this vehicle has the
FORD PATS key based engine disabling system,
and it is currently engaged. The only way to
"reset" the system is at Ford. If left unchecked,
your fuel rail system will lock down until Ford
does reset it, so if you can get it to start,
see Ford service for inspection/repair before it
goes bad all together.
It can be disabled using the following module
after that is accomplished, so it NEVER happens
again. Fords are notorious for this part
in the ignition, waring out early.
My expertise is in disabling
the PATS for remote start applications,
so if it's me, I would suggest the IM04-PKFORD
bypass kit to get around the issue. (69.95)
This Bypass Module is designed to momentarilly
allow the engine to remote start by sending a proper
coded pulse to open the fuel rail passlock injector
cut off circuit. Allthough, a remote starter is not required.
The output from an alarm/remote starter
would then shut down the pulse, once it has detected
the engine has engaged, and preserve the integrity
of the PATS system.
That is it's designed purpose.
However, in your case, this input wire on
the IM04-PKFORD module, instead of going to a
momentary ground pulse from an
alarm/remote starter, would go to a
constant chassis ground, through
the bypass module, grounding out the PATS.
The PATS would always be bypassed as long
as that wire is chassis grounded.
I can not speak about a damaged PATS system,
like if a thief has destroyed it, because I do not
get into this part of FORD'S security application.
But as a happy coincidence to installing
after market remote starters, this does work on bypassing
transponder in most all FORD vehicles we've run into,
including your year FORD vehicle as well.
Please note. This bypass is designed to circumvent PATS
and allow for the remote starting of the engine.
To use this item for simple bypassing, you MUST have 2
original FORD programmed ignition keys for the
module to copy. If you do not have these keys, this
operation will not work. However if you do have the keys,
and can start the car, you would be all set.
The car should then allow start
with any hardware store key.
It would work on this one too.
