Question
1998 Ford Contour SVT. When starting (sometimes) the light
starts flashing and the auto will turn over but not start. Book says that this is a problem with the key, but other key produces same results. Have not been stranded yet but sometims takes 3-5 attempts for light to stay out - and for car to start. What is problem and can system be bypassed temporarily since I am 700 miles from home.

No, it appears the transponder assembly has a sensor fault in the ignition switch.
Only an inspection and repair is going to help here.
No magic switch to throw etc... the damage needs to be repaired.
