Auto Theft Prevention/ProLock
Expert: INSTALLSUPPORT - 11/28/2008
QuestionHave a ProLock (looks like standard/relay system) security key that when removed prevents engine from starting on 1995 Acura Integra. The removable key has a button that looks like this: ((O above the PROLOCK logo. The O is the button. There are six pins, but contact points on three pins are covered with tape. Mechanic I bought car from said alarm was disabled. Have an alarm flasher button on top of steering column, and alarm flasher on autoshift column area...both of which do not flash when car is locked or ProLock key removed. Why are 3 pins taped up? Are those related to the alarm? And the functioning (untaped) 3 pins keep car from starting without the ProLock? What happens if I remove the tape covering the 3 pins? Should I not do this and just let an expert work on it? I would like to have a functioning alarm system for the car instead of just the engine startup prevention. How do you rate ProLock...is it easy to bypass? Unrelated question: Is window etching with VIN# make thieves think twice about stealing your car?
AnswerWell, to answer the last one first.
Yes etching glas is a fine cheap & subtle way to
help idenity the parts, not just glass, but now catalitic
converters etc... The parts are WHY the car is stolen.
Now for the infamous Prolock...
On a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being the connect2car
cell phone interfacing vehicle control system, & 1 being
a monkey throwing feces, it's a 3.
Very easy to cut out, and re attach the starter wire.
An interesting way to keep a customer feeling secure,
but in essence is a starter kill relay with a circuit
completion key.
Oh, the other 3 wires taped off? For show.
The REAL wires to know about are 1 ground, 1 power, 1 ignition,
and 2 starter wires get removed (all prolock),
repair the vehicle's starter wire, drive away.
Yes then get a decent alarm and a buried starter kill relay
now to make it safer this time.
Takes longer.
