Auto Theft Prevention/Security Light/No start

Question
I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE Sedan.  Every now and then the security light will come on and stay on.  It doesn't happen every time though.  Recently, my car has also started to not start.  Once again, this doesn't happen every time.  The engine will turn over but not start.  The battery and alternator are fine.  The spark plugs have recently been replaced.  All other mechanical problems are pretty much ok.  It just seems that my car has been on a steady decline.  A couple years ago my factory alarm stopped working and I have lost the security system capabilities.  I'm not sure if these problems coincide or not.  Someone at Advanced Auto told me today that it could be the security chip in my key that just needs to be replaced/reset or just going bad.  Any  ideas for how to fix this?  Or is the engine trouble even related to the security system?  I haven't been able to tell  if the security light coming on is the cause of my engine not starting.  I'm clueless right now and need help.  My car  is becoming unreliable due to this problem.

Answer
Hey , I get this one a whole lot
(as you probably have read.)

and of course, & Unfortunately, yes this
vehicle has a the PASSLOCK II key
based engine disabling system that is waring out
from use over time. The troublesome device is in
ALL 98+ GM vehicles, and yours is no exception.
To get around this, you will require a
GM PLJX bypass module to circunvent it and
KEEP IT THAT WAY!

A bypass is required to interupt PASSLOCK for
remote start applications. It is done by
grounding the system to allow it to start,
then re establish it for security usage.

This Passlock Bypass Module is designed to provide
a proper coded pulse to open the fuel rail
passlock injector cut off circuit.

The output from an alarm/remote starter
would then shut down the pulse, once it has detected
the engine has engaged, and preserve the integrity
of the passlock system.

That is it's designed purpose.

This is a self learning, resistor sensing
and self adjusting module. Once the VATS/PASSLOCK
wires have been tapped,
you would press the program button to learn,
and it does. The car should then allow start
with any hardware store key.
