Auto Theft Prevention/2000 Cavalier Theft Light - Passlock 2 Question
Expert: INSTALLSUPPORT - 4/2/2008
QuestionQUESTION: First of all, thanks for your help. Yesterday while driving the car it just stalled and I could get it to start a couple of times but would just stall again, until it would finally not start at all. Had it towed to a mechanic friend's shop and hooked up the computer to it and the code was Theft System. Working through his troubleshooting guide we changed the Ignition Module which got the car running and thought everything was fine - until the drive home where the Theft Light would come on and all power would be lost. This happen several times, but power resumed and I was able to make it home. Well now I don't think we fixed the problem and I certainly do not trust the car. While reading other questions here I beleive that I saw that my car has a resistor based transponder in the ignition cycliner and not the key. Is this ignition cylinder the same as the ignition module or it is the assembly where the key is inserted? (Obviously I am not a mechanic as shown by my stupidity). Reason I ask is could it be true that maybe this resistance is cutting in and out going down the road? I am afraid that my next step may be to take to the dealer. Any help would be appreciated. Also, if I where to just get the PLJX Bypass Module, do you think this would take care of my problem or may there also be something else wrong? Thanks, Pat
ANSWER: Classic Passlock issue, and yes, the PLJX module
will solve this for you.
The switch is only part of the PASSLOCK system.
The rest is attatched to the fuel injection rail.
The PLJX matches the code on the passlock, restores
the use of the ignition and
when grounded, renders the PASSLOCK inert until
ungrounded.
I sell alot of these to Cavalier owners.
Not an uncommon issue.
In stock when ready.

QUESTION: Sorry to keep bugging you but when looking at www.passlock2.com, I am getting confused. All I want is the bypass module w/o remote start. Is there a schematic or directions that I can see for installing just the basic PLJX module. I am worried that my car will not make it to anyplace to have one installed and I just want to make sure I can do the job myself. In your opinion how easy is the installation? Between myself, a mechanical engineer and my friend who is an electrical engineer should we be able to install the module??? Thanks again for all your help, Pat.
AnswerThe trigger wire from a remote starter would provide
a momentary negative pulse, thus allowing for the
PLJX module to match the code and disable the
Passlock system to disenguage while started,
then back to original condition when out of
remote start application.
In your case, you would ground this trigger wire on the
module to the body of the car, not allowing
Passlock to enguage again until ungrounded.
This means it's gone from the equation,
and any store bought key will work.
I don't provide information online for the installation,
since this is a business, but yes, a technician
is advised if unsure of your installation skills.
An Electrical Engineer can work this out in less
then an hour.
I hope this was clearer for you.
