Question
QUESTION: 1yr ago I purchased a 89 Toyota Cressida and was never told the car had a  working Alarm. I thought the red light on dash was for show. The batt recently lost it's charge. When jumping the batt and attempting to start, the horn went off and the headlights started flashing. I can't get the car to start now, and can't find a switch. Can you help?

ANSWER: Usually found to the left leg area.
look under the dash area for a button or, a toggle
switch. When you locate it, turn on the ignition
key, press and hold in the button (little
spring loaded micro button, red or black possibly)
until the alarm chirps 1 time. This should over ride
the system, and only the keyless entry part,
if installed, would still be operating.
The LED (light emiting diode) light in the dash
should also go on solid.

At this point. the alarm would have reset.
If this had a starter kill relay installed,
it would now be opened, and the engine would
turn over when tried. This is over ride/reset.

You would repeat these steps to go back to
user mode but in your case, I'd leave it this
way until you can either get replacement
remotes (unlikely), or, replace the alarm with one
you know and understand how it operates for
the best overall experience (suggested!).

Let me know what you discover
& if you want to upgrade to a
better system.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick response. There was no visible button/switch, so I opened the plastic panel and still couldn't find a switch or button. There was just the diagnostic port on left leg side. I still can't start the car.

Answer
Hmmm, sorry to hear it.
Well then, it's on to removal from
the factory wiring under the dash.

I would suggest you go to the local
Circuit City or Best Buy or any other
local installation shop for inspection/repair
or removal to solve this issue for you.

Wish I could have offered more.

Good luck with it.
