Auto Theft Prevention/2001 jeep grand cherokee starts then shuts down

Question
hello. my 01 JGC laredo keeps shutting itself down. this is not a constant thing but is happening more often all the time. when it does this the jeep will start then shut off after abour five seconds of running. i keep trying different things till finally it stays running. sometimes if you just wait an hour or so it will run without doing anything. when it does this there is an orange circle with a line running through it (picture of a key) lit up on the dash. also the drivers door key port (the only one on this jeep something i've never seen before) has never worked since new. when you put the key in and turn left or right nothing happens. if my battery ever goes dead i don't know how i'd be able to unlock the door. anyway do you have any ideas on how to solve my problem? even a way to shut down the whole securty system is fine with me.
thanks in advance and i think you really have a great site with alot of people who really know there stuff:)

Answer
Not great news I am afraid.
But the good part is that it is intermitent.
You will require a bypass module to get around this
issue before the switch goes bad alltogether in
the ignition column.

The module is called the IB-UCH or the IM03 (69.95 FOR EITHER)
and will learn the transponder codes from your
keys, then go inline BEYOND the switch to
substitute for the key.

This way, the smart key system will be rendered inert.

However, timing is everything here.
One caution, if you wait too long, and the smart key
shuts down the fuel injectors all the time and you can not
start the engine, ever, then the issue is now at the
JeepChrysler service department. There is nothing you could do
on your own at that point. Jeep would need to
inspect and repair the problem, which can run huge $$$!

Anyway, it's not uncommon. These switch based systems
ware over time.

In my opinion it's an intended design flaw to get folks
coming back in for service 4 to 6 years after
purchase, but it's only a theory. Especially
with GM cars n trucks. :>\

That's what I have on this one for ya.
Sorry bout that.
