Auto Theft Prevention/Highlander factory motion alarm
Expert: INSTALLSUPPORT - 1/9/2009
QuestionQUESTION: My daughter's Toyota Highlander has the factory alarm, 2005 I think, and for no reason it intermittently goes off with no warning. Dealer is no help. How does she just disable this thing or set the sensitivity higher? Thank you for your help.
ANSWER: Please be more descriptive if possible.
"GOING OFF?"
I need to determine whether it's a factory alarm
issue or, if it's an aftermarket system you are
dealing with.
Is it: Headlights flashing, car horn honking
and a worded SECURITY" light in the dash flashing?
(doubtfull since none of the notes show this
car as having a factory alarm system)=FACTORY
Or,
is it: flashing parking lights,
an LED in the dash area, and a siren
going off?= AFTER MARKET
Let me know more on this to better
advise you on a course of action
to take.

QUESTION: Robert, the first question said it was a FACTORY alarm and I do not know if the lights go off, but the horn honks and she has to run out to unlock and then hope it does not go off again. I forgot this is a 2001 Highlander and it is FACTORY alarm. She has taken it to the dealer and they were no help. She thought it was because of a dirty engine area or because of heat or cold, but nothing conclusive. I would like to just disable the alarm as it is going off for no reason. Or increase sensitivity but I have found no clues. Help is much appreciated.
AnswerI hear ya, but the reason I asked was that as an installer,
I can use the car's own horn as my noise source, but if the
lights are flashing (parking lights) tells me it AM.
Most installers will not use the headlight circuit.
So ok, let's go with the idea it's "factory".
Normally, disarming is done by either key in the
drivers door, turn left to reset and ground the alarm,
and then drive on. Disabling this system for good
would involve a surgical splice and ground on
the factory disarm/ no unlock wire.
When done, it would not trigger the factory system,
ever.
If you want that solution, I can't share it online
due to the rules of the ALLEXPERT site.
Go to www.wirewerx.com and choose the appropriate link.
If this DOES NOT SOLVE IT, then it is probably an
after market system installed by the dealer by contractor.
This is most common and may have another solution.
