QUESTION: WHAT IS THE Anti-Theft reset procedure FOR A 2001 MALIBU

ANSWER: Hi Phillip,

Don't know the reason you would  need to do this unless you changed the ignition lock housing or if you are trying to reset the factory alarm garbage, but here you go--

Turn ingition lock to ON for 10 min. Turn off, turn to ON for 10 min and turn off. Turn on for 10 minutes and you should have reset it.

It takes 30 min total to reset, but the only reason you would do it would be if you changed the ignition lock housing.

The anti-theft as GM calls PASS LOCK does not prevent theft. It does not even have a special ignition key ($3 to replace at hardware store). If the ignition lock can be rotated in any way, the engine will start.

GM'S great idea here, was if the ignition lock was ripped out of the housing, the magnetic field was broken and the vehicle's computer would not be able to sense the rotation of the ignition lock. My  opinion as an expert in auto theft is that this anti theft system is junk, and anyone relying on this system for theft prevention should consider installing at the very least a hidden starter disable switch.
If the car is insured and stolen, don't think your insurance company will pay on a theft claim with this. To them, the car is "Unstealable." In fact, I have done numerous criminal defense cases in Ohio because of this junk!

Glad I could help.

I would like to tell you what caused it to be reset. Possibly there is a problem with the BCM (body Control Module-Vehicle's computer). Not a real common problem, just a possibility.

When you reset it as a locksmith because of changing the ignition lock housing there are 10 different "R" (resistance) codes. Like it's predessesor the VATS where a resistance pellet was built into the ignition key. The PASS LOCK has the resistance built into the ignition lock assembly. When the lock cylinder is rotated, there is a magnetic field between the ignition lock cylinder and the housing. The signal is sent via hall effect switch to the BCM and once the rotation of the ignition lock signal is sent, and the engine will start.

I once stated a common problem with intermittent no start situations I ran across was that the ignition lock would spray lubricant on the housing. The correction was to remove the ignition lock, spay grease off with brake cleaner and wipe off. The grease would actually block the signal.

Then, some goof wrote back that he had never run into this problem and because he (Clem) never saw it happen, it must not be true.

I know many who ran across this problem and evidently Clem's locksmith experience on GM PASS LOCK must be very little.

If you are happy with my suggestion of the fix, please nominate me for expert of the month. That would be appreciated.

I told you about the grease problem because this too could cause a reset problem too.
