hi
i recently bought a1997 explorer on ebay the seller told me the only problem with it was the starter was shot after replacing the starter the car still would not run it fires up and goes for 3-4 seconds before cutting out a neighbor hered me trying to start the car and suggested it could be that the immoaliser is not knocking off but i don't know if it has one and if so whether it is factory or aftermarket or what if it does is there a way to disarm it either permanently or so it works correctly and if so and the solution is as your previous answer to the other question I.E. dark green purple wire splice can you be more specific as there are about three of very similar colors as i look and the one with the override switch i cant even find a switch under dash please can you help a uslas layman in his hour of need

Hello,

I see you are in the UK, which could make my answer here not accurate as it pertains as to where the vehicle was from. The Ford Securilock (chip in key) was not employed in the US until 1998.
In the UK, the Securilock or PATS was named Safeguard, but I do not know when the Thatchem standards were required and if a 1997 Explorer was equipped in the UK.

The way the system works is on the start circuit. Some were equipped with a starter disable and some were not. If a properly programmed key was not recognized and the engine would crank, and you may hear it fire, but would not start and run.

Once running, the factory system if so equipped was disabled and would not cause the engine to stall or run just a couple of seconds.

What no one understands about the factory and even after market systems is the liability issue. No one wants the engine to shut down after it is running because there is no control of the situation.

One example would be; the vehicle is going down the road, the engine stalls, now the power brakes and steering is more difficult to use and an accident can happen.

Some systems shut off fuel. Some shut off the ignition and some the starter. One thing in common: Only on the start and crank circuit.

On the 98' Explorer, and PATS equipped, if the correct key is not used, circuit #361 shuts down under the hood controling not just the fuel pump, but the injector pulse as well, but only in the START mode.

Once the engine is running, the engine will not stall due to the factory anti-theft system.


You need to be real careful reading my answers because I was referring to a GM vehicle with a yellow or purple wire and this was for the start circuit. Not a Ford.


Many automotive locksmiths have key readers that can determine if your Explorer is transponder equipped. One such reader known as the Strattec Quick Code.

Yes, if equipped with PATS (allegedly unstealable) on your 97' Explorer it can be bypassed, but I never recommend doing such because the ins company won't pay if stolen.

You will probably be best off trying to fix this by forgetting what your neighbor said. The problem does not sound from your discription to be a anti-theft problem and check out the basics as it relates to electrical and fuel. Timing etc.

One thin you might want to check though. Again, this will be different if left hand or right hand drive.

On the US version, there is a fuel pump reset switch mounted under the carpet on the  front passenger side. The reason for the design was to shut the fuel pump off in the event of an accident. Press on this switch to see if it resets and the engine will stay running. Very common problem we ran across over the years.
