Auto Theft Prevention/Ford Explorer 1997 Factory (not dealer) alarm malfunctions
Expert: INSTALLSUPPORT - 3/24/2009
QuestionQUESTION: Hi,
The alarm goes off at random times (actually, almost always about 20-25 minutes after the car was locked) for no reason. Shops first say they will fix it, but then refuse, saying it is linked to onboard computer. On the other hand, there are answers here referring to DarkGreen/Purple wire for factory alarm. If it is so easy, what is the problem? And if it isn't, what are my remedies? I am thinking of disconnecting the horn - is it the only option?
Please help!

ANSWER: Please be more descriptive if possible.
"GOING OFF?"
I need to determine whether it's a factory alarm
issue or, if it's an aftermarket system you are
dealing with.
Is it: Headlights flashing, car horn honking
and a worded SECURITY" light in the dash flashing?
(doubtfull since none of the notes show this
car as having a factory alarm system)=FACTORY
Or,
is it: flashing parking lights,
an LED in the dash area, and a siren
going off?= AFTER MARKET
Let me know more on this to better
advise you on a course of action
to take.

QUESTION: Thanks for taking up my question. The parking lights are flashing (not headlights), and the horn (not siren) is honking in a steady manner, as if someone pressed on the steering wheel every half- or 3/4 of a second. I cannot answer regarding the message on the dashboard, as I hurry up to remotely shut it off ASAP.
I took it to an alarm shop, and they told me that there were two alarm systems installed, the factory one and the aftermarket, and since my request was not clear (BS!), they disconnected the aftermarket one, by shorting some cable near the driver's door to the metal - they showed it to me. Needless to say, it didn't fix it. When I brought it back half an hour later, they refused to do anything with it (and to refund my money).
In addition, if I try to lock the doors by pressing on the electric lock button on any equipped door (driver, passenger, or on the interior panel left of the hatch) - not the pin type but the one that locks all doors simultaneously, - the word "theft" lights up on the dashboard. It doesn't seem to be linked to the sound alarms, though, as they go off whether I pressed that button or used one on the remote.
I think I described it thoroughly, but let me know if more clarification is needed.
Please help.
Thanks.

Answer
Then ground the green/purple as suggested, and
also follow the valet override set up too:
Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, locate, press and hold in the
valet/overide button, found under the
dash area, (push button, spring loaded)
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area goes on solid,
and the siren chirps once.
(Your valet switch might be the toggle
(on/off) type. in this case, key on,
flip switch in opposite direction,
then turn the key off.)
This should reset the alarm, and reset
the grounded relay on the starter wire,
allowing you to start the engine.
At this point, the only thing working would
be the keyless entry from the alarm,
if it came equipped that way.
Just Repeat these steps to place it
back to usable armed mode.
You may get 2 chirps, confirming it,
and the lights may flash twice as well.
That should do it.
Good luck.
