QUESTION: dear sir i have been to pick my car up after having an exhuast fitted but the garage said my battery went flat and they had to use a booster to start it. trouble is the alarm wont turn off, the car will start( dont know why as it has immobiliser) but indicators flash and siren goes off... its a factory nissan alarm the car is 1998 thankyou

ANSWER: Hello,

From your description, does not sound like a factory installed alarm. Most factory alarms used flashing head lights (not indicators) and the horn.

It may be a dealer installed after market system, but without knowing which brand, there is not much I can tell you to disarm.

A general rule of thumb is that installers usually mount a switch under the dash you can toggle with the ignition on and that will disarm the system.

Here is the problem: I have over the last 20+ years worked on just about every factory installed as well as after market alarm and so-called anti-theft system. I have so many accronyms in my head, that hardly anything makes sense anymore. I do my best to give the most accurate information as possible, however over the years I have been required to take into account all little changes the manufacturer throws at me from time to time.

A good example is the 2003 BMW I series where the vehicle showed the option of a factory alarm. The factory alarm was built exclusively for BMW but was installed by the dealer. In the court case, the insurance expert stated the car was not stolen because of the factory alarm. Since it was an option and was manufactured by another company for BMW, the expert made his conclusion that the vehicle could not be stolen. Interestingly enough, after research, I found the vehicle was not so equipped. In this vehicle however, if installed, it had a seperate siren and the audible warning did not come from the horn.

I am sorry, but I do not have schematics for your 9 year old Nissan. I don't know if your local library has a manual for your car, but that is the first place I would go after searching your owner's manual in which this problem may be addressed.

It should not be your responsibility that the car does not start after they let the battery go dead. Sounds like they should be responsible for contacting a Nissan dealership to get assistance or pay for the repair.

Because we as consumers got stuck with these problems of no-start because of the factory installed or dealer installed anti-theft system, it almost requires us to purchase an electrical service manual to keep our cars in order to start them. If you want to get a manual specific to your car, try ebay or Craig's list. In the long run, the manual will help you with all minor problems.

The factory should have never been allowed to install security. First, most of the engineers have no clue as to how vehicles are stolen. These systems are more problem than good to the owner. When dealing with a car over 5 years old (sometimes much less), parts are not even available any longer.

These systems were built for planned obsolence where the dealer was the only place you could get it fixed.

Commonly, factory systems can be disarmed by sitting in the driver's seat with the door open and lock the door with the button. Close the door and unlock the driver's door with the key in the door lock.

You can try that and see if it works.
