Question I've heard scuttlebutt about the factory installed security system in the 2009 Ford Mustang having the ability to have all of its internal capabilities activated via the OBD2 connector using the proprietary Ford OBD2 scanning device. Is this true? If so, that means all the hardware is already installed in the car and all that's needed to activate the "higher functions" of the alarm is the correct data stream and addressing codes. Assuming that's true, do you know of any scanner that's commercially available capable of activating the alarm hardware's full potential? My dealer wants $350 to "install" a more "sophisticated" alarm into my 2009 Mustang and for that price (plus a few dollars more perhaps), I can buy THE Ford OEM Scanner!
Any info on this will be appreciated.
Thanks

Answer Hello,
To be perfectly honest, I still am acquiring information on the 2009 Ford products and at this moment on this particular subject, you may be more knowledgable than me on the 2009 Ford. You need to realize, I try to stay up to date with all makes and models and not Mustang specific.
The Ford factory OBD II scanner is known as a New Generation Star Tester (NGS). Very pricey around $5K. Then you need the software for the 2009 vehicles and then in certain instances has to get data from the Ford computer OASIS.
I do not believe you are going to buy the scanner and software you need for less than thousands. If someone says they can sell you the scanner cheap, I would be thinking, what is the scanner for? 1994 Ford?
I am not an engineer and when you talk data streaming to me is is all foreign to me.
As for the hardware pre-installed, its possible.
Here is something I will tell you. I have NEVER seen an effective vehicle security system put out by the manufacturer. As the car gets older, you will find it will be more trouble to you than a thief.
I have had plenty of experience opposing the designers of the factory anti-theft systems. Many still think cars are stolen by hotwiring (cars haven't been hot wired since 1969) and they design their anti-theft system accordingly.
I don't care if you have what you feel is the best factory alarm system in the world. It's not. If the thief can disarm a 2009 Mustang, he can disarm all 2009 Mustangs and in many cases the same alarm is used in many models.
After market or factory, there is nothing you can do to stop a thief!
You cannot stop it from being towed! You can park tight between two cars and it does not matter. This is why I say the consumer is being lied to when sold a vehicle with an anti-theft system. You know like the Ford PATS (Passive Anti Theft System) or the GM VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System). This is a blatant misrepresentation of the truth.
If Ford thinks that alarm upgrade is so good for $350.00 why don't you ask them if they will warranty your car against theft then?
Personally, I think you would be much better off making sure you have good comprehensive insurance coverage for that $350.00 instead.
Oh that's right--Insurance companies will deny a theft claim on this vehicle because according to them and your dealer the PATS makes it impossible to steal.
