Auto Theft Prevention - Key will not turn in ignition lock - 2004 Impala

Expert: Rob Painter, ASE, CFL, CFEI - 6/6/2009

Question
The key will not turn in my 2004 Impala ignition lock. The shift lever is locked in park but the steering wheel is NOT locked and turns freely. The car will start and run using Astrostart. The radio theft deterrent light blinks/stays on as I think it should. I just repaired the speedometer stepper motor and had removed the dashboard. During this process I did remove and replace the key while the shift lever was NOT in park. Help?

Answer
Hello,

Here is something you need to know about the 2004 Impala. The reason the steering wheel lock does not lock is because these cars hasn't had a locking steering wheel since 1998. You have a dash mounted lock and that is why these vehicles are so easy to steal!!!

It sounds like you did not put the ignition lock cylinder in right. When reinstalling with key, the shaft on the back of the lock must fit into the slot in the housing and then you rotate the lock until it fits in place and turns. It sounds like you pushed the lock in without lining up the shaft at the back of the cylinder.
You can try inserting the key in and try to rotate the cylinder and pushing at the same time without breaking the key.

I have seen this happen before when someone tries to install a lock cylinder. If you can't get the lock to line up, the only thing you can do is contact a local locksmith and see if it can be drilled out.
