Question
I have a honda civic with a pro lock key that if i take out the car will not start, which is great. but I recently took it out so that when i leave the vehicle noone can take my car. But now once i put it in again the car wont start. throughout the whole day it has been working but now ever since this one time i took it out and put it back in it wont start. Ive taken it out before and everything and it started up just fine. but i continue to try to find out whats wrong with my car.
I tried to jump it with cables thinkin the battery was dead but thats not the problem even trying to jump it wont work. the onyl way i can get my car running is to jump start it by making it roll first, i have a manual car so i just drop the clutch while it rolling. But now ever since i had takin the pro lock key out whether its in or not it will not start with just the key. Should i remove it or is there a way to reset it?

Answer
Hello,

Very sorry for the delay. Answered the question on my Iphone and I guess it did not go through. I am also currently going through that wonderful task of moving as well.

Prolock no longer exists. Popular in the 80's and 90's but lots of problems just like the same type of product known as Stargard. Dealer installed on every car. Paid $8 installed and charged up to $2,000 when buyer was financing car. Many spiffs like this literally made dealers super rich! (rip off big time).

If the buyer outright refused to pay for this over-rated starter kill with what was called a computer chip key (not), dealer would then forced to put in dummy key in the plug that had no handle.

You really need to get this junk out of your car. A local alarm store can remove it and you might want to purchase one of their stand alone remote starter disable or have the keyless entry and the starter disable.

The problem with Stargard and Prolock: Gave the owner a false sense of security. You remove the special key thinking the car can't start if someone tries to steal the car. The truth of the matter, thieves knew how to defeat these in the early 90s when they came out on the market. You think that is a special key. I have one just like just about everyone in the US. Install a quarter in the socket across all the terminals! End of security!!!!

About as worthless as the Club. To the average person, it appears as though the Club prevents turning of the steering wheel and appears to secure the car. Never did unless a really dumb thief tried to steal the car. Thieves would just cut the steering wheel with bolt cutters or more commonly saw it (takes seconds) with a hacksaw blade. The Club was then removed. In one case the thieves got the club off, lady came out to her car, was beaten with the club and then raped. That happened in Milwaukee probably 15 years ago.

In 2000, A&E did a documentary "Stealing Wheels" in which I was featured. I held up a Club with one hand and a cut steering wheel in the other. I stated if you have this steering wheel locking device, this is what happens to your steering wheel!

About a week after its airing, Winner International (makers of the Club) contacted me. The gentleman stated Karen Winner was not happy with me for my comments about steering wheel locking devices. I told him tough! I really got annoyed repairing theft recoveries that had cut steering wheels. (side note--Did you know there were 8 different shades of gray on a GM steering wheel?)

His only comment as it related to the efficiency of the Club is that they sold 25 million units. My thought was OK, how does that relate to the product working to protect the car?

There were so many here today, gone tomorrow security devices in which the buyer was commonly a victim. There is no regulation of these products.

Even California's Representative Darrell Issa's products although effective (Directed Electronics-Viper and a whole bunch other brands) were only as good as the install and 98% of any alarm installations I have seen have been inferior because installers have no clue as to the methods used to steal cars.

You need to get the prolock removed as quickly as possible because it sounds like it is going to strand you. Should not take long or cost much to remove.

I could write a book on all this. That's right, I did back in 1998. Occassionally you will see used copies on Amazon "Auto theft-Let the Truth be Known!"

You need something. Old Hondas and Hondas are still very hot to thieves. In fact, recently read articles from Portland, OR and Tulsa, OK referring to this.

Auto Security has been a multi billion dollar industry since the early 90s and as I stated, to the consumer, the product looked like it would stop a thief, but then the average guy has no clue as to the methods thieves use to steal cars and evidently a number of security manufacturers like Prolock, Stargard, the Club and a vast array of other security makers didn't either.

Sorry for the long answer, but I like to expound on my favorite subject.
