Auto Theft Prevention/Venture 98: spooked the VATS

Hello Rob, it all started with an intermittent unlocking using the keyless remote control ; then one day it just did not wanted to open the doors at all. (Prime suspect is receiver module ; battery / transmitter are OK). Of course when I opened the driver's door with the key - not the remote - the alarm blared, and the van was immobilized. In a twist of fate (really), I figured out how to run the van by removing some fuses... so much for "un-theft-ability"! Anyway, now the car is due for inspection, and the OBD diagnostic port is not powered (you know, some fuses are missing). If I put them back, the van is immobilized, and alarm blares. I tried the "30 minutes process", and more. I do not want to spend $$$$ neither (if possible), and was wondering if you could point at some reputable VATS bypass. PS: What kind of keyless entry has the van anyway (the key seems plain and simple old fashioned) ?

Hello,

The first thing to realize in case you try to buy parts, you have a factory installed alarm, not vats.
Vats used for 19 years ( 18 years after its effective date) is ignition based and incorporates a resistor chip in the key blade.

Secondly, you have a major problem just like anyone with a 15-20 year old vehicle. No replacement parts and no one that knows how to diagnose the problem.

You were fortunate to bypass it, but as you said, you lost some functions in the car. I have warned about this issue commonly and the manufacturer had no right to intergrate the alarm into major circuits in the vehicle.
It was anticipated back then that people woukd not still be using 15-20 year old cars and that they too would have bought at least 3 to 4 new cars or at least newer replacement cars.

I used to diagnose and repair factory alarm systems in the 90's, but even at that tine, if the car was five years or older I could not get replacement parts. Finally I just got so frustrated, I refused to do it any longer.

These systems are rarely bypassed successfully in which the car will run, so your are one up on others. If one gets around the system by removing fuses as you did, the collateral damage is that other systems in the vehicle as you have found.

As I stated, I quit repairing these systems by 2000.

Your problem is this: even if you go to a dealer, chances are that either the techs have not been at the dealer for 14 years, they did not specialize in the diagnoses of the factory alarm systems, the electrical, electronic information is no longer available, and new replacement parts are definately no longer available.

I learned to hate factory alarms. You would diagnose one component as being faulty, replace it and another issue would pop up.

I realize you thought I might be the answer man, and please believe me when I say I would love to help you, but I know my limitations.

The only thing I can tell you is go to http:// www.alldata.com, pay the $25 or so dollars to become a member and download the factory manuals for your van. Use the diagnostic flow chart to diagnose the problem, try to see if you can get the new part from the dealer or see if you can find it at a junkyard.

The junkyard option will be frustrating because you will find the alarm was an option and very few were so-equipped.
