QUESTION: 97 Olds Cutlass, The security light has came on and stayed on. I have picked up a resister to bypass it. When I was trying to find the wires coming under the column. I could not find it. I did find the wire for the air bag.

I find that the all knowing site that gives the type of security in a 1997 Olds Cutlass as ambiguous at best, so I have no clue as to what security a 1997 Olds Cutlass has and neither will you at http://www.forensicauto.net. These guys are goofs, but are the self-proclaimed experts on this matter and yet again, they fail miserably.
Now, I don't remember what is on this vehicle, but we can try to figure it out. There is a choice of two for that year. One being the VATS, the other being passlock.
If you have a big ugly black resistor embedded in the key, that is VATS and will have the wiring leading to the lock cylinder.
If you have no chip in the key, it is passlock.
What do you have?

OK, We now established you have VATS. I think what you are trying to do is NOT going to fix your problem because there is a current problem with the system causing the light to be illuminated.
Its worth a shot though and please tell me if the bypass does the job.
To find the wires requires you to remove the black hush panel under the driver's side dash. It needs to be fully removed. This way you can look under the dash at the column and the wiring.
You can catch the steering column wiring at the bottom of the steering column or at the junctioon block at the firewall.
The VATS is commonly shielded in an orange sheath. The 2 white wires are very thin. They are like the old phone wires we used to see, so they are very easy to identify. If you can't find the wires at the column, go for the junction box at the firewall. The wires should be exposed enough for you there to bypass as well.
As I said, please let m know if the light goes out. I would recommend soldering and shrink tube to do this right. You are dealing with a hard wire on the resistor and a very thin wire. The connection if twisted together cause it to come loose and you may be stranded.
Absolute worst case, go to an alarm store. They get the bypass kit for free and they can do all this for $50 bucks.
