Question
I just bought a 98 camry and the alarm horn has been disconnected. My problem is as soon as car is switched to on the turn signals flash on outside and on the inside I hear a clicking noise, my clock flashes an turn signal blinkers flash as well. I had an educated friend take a look at it and he says something about a relay. He pulled it out from under my steering wheel an dash area an now my car won't start! He said I need a new one is this info correct or are we on the rite track?? Please help me sir!

This is what happens when one tries to bypass the factory installed junk alarms. All major systems are integrated in the alarm. The more one tries to disable the factory system, the worse off they are! the caveat though is they never stopped thieves, just the owners. See, the thief ddoesn't have t drive the car everyday, all he cares about is that the engine runs and the car drives. The rest is a non-issue.

Now, you say you had an educated friend remove the relay. You didn't say what he was educated in. Obviously not with the Toyota factory installed alarm. No, he is not correct about needing a relay. Did you try reinstalling and see if the engine would start again? By pulling that relay out, you may have triggered an attempt theft event which will require you to take it took the dealer (tow) to have the system reset, if they can even do it being as the car is 13 years old.

This is why I have advocated on deaf ears for over 10 years that the worst possible option was a factory installed alarm! No one wants to work on them including the dealer. They don't prevent theft and yet the factory could charge up to $1,000 for this option and people would pay it!

The manufacturer in many cases knows less about theft methods than the average consumer.

Ford said their transponder prevented hot wiring and yet when I successfully defeated the junk, I hot wired the transponder system on their trucks and SUVs.

I really wish you luck in getting this vehicle running again, but now you have learned two things. Factory alarms should never be tinkered with and secondly not to have a friend screw with your vehicle in an effort to repair it. I do not make this statement lightly and realize your situation.

Chances are by removing this relay, the car is in full alarm mode, but the horn is not working from a previous situation. If the relay is installed and the engine does not start, just hope and pray your dealer still has information on the car for reset. Otherwise, you won't be driving that car any more. The chickens have come home to roost with these old cars with factory alarms and a $2,500 pound lawn ornement is made.
