QuestionI saw your response to this question below as being: Search CARPROTECTOR because this question has been answered many, many times... yet I couldn't find it by searching this site. Could you please provide a direct link to an answer? My son and I just looked at a sweet 99 Cherokee tonight in hopes of buying it for him. It has the exact same problem. Would you be able to also estimate the repair if your solution is this issue is all that is required. Thank much for the guidance...
Other Question and Description of our Issue:::
"I have a 99 cherokee with a 6 cylinder automatic. Vehicle was parked for some time and now when I try to start it, jeep will run for approx 3 seconds than quit. Also the dash gauges are not functioning. When it starts for 2 or 3 seconds it runs very rough and stumbly. I have been told by several people that this is the security system at work. When we tried to start it after being parked we had to boost it and thats when the fun started. We have had alot of people poke their heads under the bonnet but no one seems to know a definitive answer. If it any help there is a light on the dash, a key with a line through it that is staying lite that would seem to indicate the alarm was tripped at some point, but now why won't it run. Can it be disabled permanently? Thanks. "
AnswerThis vehicle has the Chrysler/Jeep SKIM system.
Jeep vehicles that use a gray ignition key
have an immobilizer system that needs
to be bypassed. If this is the issue, 2 ignition keys will
be needed as well as a transponder reset at Jeep to get this
back on the road. Wish I had better news, but this is what it
sounds like. No quicky fix I can suggest will make
the car start and run. Sorry about that.
Call Jeep service dept for an appointment.
Good luck.
