Auto Theft Prevention/Triggers alarm


QUESTION: I drive a 2008 Elantra and a few times I have set off my alarm that before then didn't know my car even had and I had to find a friend to show me to turn the key from the outside to turn it off despite it already being unlocked. And just today I unlocked the car from the backseat and opened the door from the inside and it went off. What should cause alarm? I mean if it is locked but opened from inside it doesn't seem it should go off. Likewise if it is unlocked and opened from outside.

ANSWER: Hello,

The reason that opening the door from the inside triggers the alarm is because the dome light comes on. It doesn't matter what direction the door is opened from. The dome light comes on either way. This is known as current sensing.
Once the alarm sees a draw to the battery with the dome light being on, it will trigger.

QUESTION: I don't understand. The dome light turns on every time the door opens. Why wouldn't the alarm go off every time I open the door?


Keep in mind I have to keep track of alarm both aftermarket and factory applications on all makes and models.
However when I am required specific information about let's say a 2008 Elantra I am required to access the factory service manual for that specific year and make to search for a problem with the system, which costs me $30 for each vehicle. Than I need to study as to the design and features and study the wiring schematics search for a specific issue.
Here is the problem, in theory the key fob is used to lock and unlock the locks. It is also supposed to set the alarm when you lock the doors and push the lock button twice on the key fob. In theory, the horn should beep to let you know the alarm is armed. Now, I am just citing you general information.
The first thing I would recommend is go in your glove box and read the alarm section of your owners manual, being that information is specific to your car.
Personally, I have little use for factory security. When installed on the production floor, it is already antiquated by at least 3 years, meaning you have a 2005 technology base in you 2008 vehicle. It is 3 years from the engineers table to the production line.
Factory systems are greatly inferior to aftermarket. After market is controlled by how that installer put the system in. Aftermarket designs can change immediately without the factory lag time.
If someone can defeat the alarm in your Elanta, that means the same process can be used on a number of years and all Hundys.
Many factory systems don't use perimeter sensors, which means, someone can break the glass, crawl in and get what they want and never trigger the alarm, because the dome light does not come on.
For years we did warranty repairs on factory alarms for the dealers that did not want to touch them. We got to the point we wouldn't either with discontinued parts and poor reference material. I hate factory alarms.
If you have issues with one, can't be bypassed without taking out other major systems. The thief doesn't care, but if your headlights don't work, you would care!
As I said, review your owners manual and it will give you the answers you need to know for that specific vehicle.
