Auto Theft Prevention/98 Subaru Outback alarm
Expert: INSTALLSUPPORT - 9/25/2007
QuestionQUESTION: About a month a go my keyless entry remote stopped working as well then completely stopped, i assumed it was the battery and replaced it only to find that that was not the problem. then the next time i got into my car it would not start unless i pressed the security program button under the dash, and now everytime i start the car i have to press this button. I took the remote to the subaru dealership and they said it's working fine, any thoughts?
ANSWER: Put it into override with that button and reset it.
It sounds as if all you've done up till now,
is momentarilly pressed the button, and had a
one time only save.
Meaning in overide mode, no alarm. But the benefit of
going into and back out of overide is to reset the
alarm to normal. Then you would not need to press that button everytime.
Ok, turn on the ignition
key, press and hold in the button
until the alarm chirps 1 time.
This should over ride the system,
and only the keyless entry part,
if installed, would still be operating.
The LED (light emiting diode) light in the dash
should also go on solid.
At this point. the alarm would have reset.
If this had a starter kill relay installed,
it would now be opened, and the engine would
turn over when tried.
You would repeat these steps to go back to
user mode to see if this was corrected.
Let me know if it works for yours.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick response i tried your suggestion, held the button for almost 2 minutes and it didn't chirp... so I'm not sure what to try next...
AnswerThen it's on to removal, repair.
This will requires tape, wire cutters
and the wiring chart (www.wiringcharts.com)
do retrifit the alarm.
Sorry, but if the parts don't work correctly,
then it time to extract it before it becomes a
big problem.
