Auto Theft Prevention/Car alarm won't turn off
Expert: INSTALLSUPPORT - 11/28/2007
QuestionQUESTION: I have a 1999 Sebring, battery and electronic locks were dead, had to break into, now cant get car alarm to turn off. Every time I open doors or start car, the alarm goes off, how do I disable?
ANSWER: Please tell me what you are experiencing.
I need to determine whether it's a factory alarm
issue or, if it's an aftermarket system you are
dealing with.
Is it: Headlights flashing, car horn honking
and a worded SECURITY" light in the dash flashing?
(doubtfull since none of the notes show this
car as having a factory alarm system)=FACTORY
Or,
is it: flashing parking lights,
an LED in the dash area, and a siren
going off?= AFTER MARKET
Let me know more on this to better
advise you on a course of action
to take.

QUESTION: The vehicle is a 1999 JXI Chrysler Sebring Convertible. The alarm system is the factory theft alarm system, which was an optional item for this vehicle. We are not the original owner and were not given the transmitter when we bought the car, only the key. What is happening is the horn sounds and the headlights and interior lights flash for 18 minutes (I have disabled the horn part temporily by pulling the fuse). After the lights finally stop flashing, if I unlock and open the door with the key, this starts all over again. PS: My boyfriend had to use a slim jim to get into the car and I'm afraid he may have done some sort of damage inside the driver's door panel. When the battery has gone this dead in the past, the power door locks wouln't open the car with the key, and we had to slim jim if before, but never had the same problem with the alarm. Is there a series of codes or something?
Thanks!
ANSWER: Damn.
Ok, if the OEM alarm is malfunctioning now,
(car horn blarring and head lights flashing)
odds are, it will again.
Get a good technician
in there to do this.
Normally, you would insert the key in
the drivers door, turn left, then right
to disarm and reset it. If yours is malfunctioning,
you can disable it for good by doing the following:
The FACTORY ALARM DISARM WIRE IS
lt green/orange |+ |is in the
drivers kick panel above the hood release.
The factory alarm disarm requires a
positive trigger with a 470 ohm resistor wired
in series.
See positive relays at www.relayhelp.com
This terminates the OEM alarm functions entirely.
The down side is you will need to add a
remote keyless entry system to the vehicle to make that work. Labor intensive.
I strongly suggest you contact the local Dodge/Chrysler
service & parts department, and purchase the remote,
and have them program it to your system.
However, an aftermarket installation into this particular
vehicle can be very expensive at a shop.
This one is reffered to as the classic "pay the dollar"
factory system. The aftermarket solution in the Sebring
convertable is harder and more expensive to add, then staying with the OEM parts.
I know it sucks, but this car is unusually difficult
to work on. I do not envy your choices.
Sorry about the bad news :>( ,
but just the messenger here!

QUESTION: Hello again, okay, problem partially solved. I removed the relay and the headlights stopped flashing, but the interior door lights and rear view mirror lights still flash when I open the door. I hope I did this right, I clipped the lt. green/orange wire and the same interior lights stopped flashing for one door close/open, but started again, next time I opened the door, they started again. Please advise!
Thanks again.
AnswerOk, I can't go any further here as you chose
not to do what I suggested earlier about
how hard the car was to work on.
You may have damaged the system now.
PLEASE re attach the wire you "clipped",
(don't do that again!)
and call in a professional to do this for you,
or you won't be happy about the out come.
Really, get someone on this and
repair that wire!
