Auto Theft Prevention/Stolen keys

Question
Hi

I had my only set of keys stolen to my Honda Civic '98 and Honda have sid that it is £750 to replace the locking system. Is this totally necessary? I can get in the car as I have the key fob. Does this turn the immobilser off? and if so can I just get a normal key cut or something - as the key has a chip in that i cannot replace

Cheers

Answer
1600.00 dollars is outrageous.
The honda civic here (US) is a base car,
and the 1998 version did not come equipped
with an immobilizer, so this is a UK version,
but you should be able to get new keys programmed
for it for a whole lot less.

If the key's "chip" has beed reset, then tray another
Honda dealer for this service. I don't understand
why they would have to replace the whole assembly?
Seems like overkill.

You are correct, that makes very little sense.

Shop around, and explain to the next dealership
you simply wish to reprogram the keys you have
to the current system in this car.

See what that does and let me know what you
discover then.
