Auto Theft Prevention/anti theft system on cheverolet malibu

Question
I have a cheverolet malibu 2000 year.  I was told that it won't crank because it ran out of gas twice. The last time this happened I was told I needed to keep it at 1/2 full or more at all times which I did I stay at the gs pump and it did fine for a while and now it locked me out again.  I took it to a mechanic once and he unlocked it, but now I'm at the same place where I can't get into my car.
It acts as if it wants to crank but it doesn't.
I've tried to change keys, turn to on position and wait 10 min and try to crank,(doesn't work),tried to reset the radio anti theft system still nothing.

Help, what do I do? What's causing this?

Any help given will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi,

You are addressing a whole bunch of problems here and none relate to the GM PASSLOCK (MRD) system.

The way the PASSLOCK works is there is no special ignition key (Easily copied at a hardware store). The security is built into the ignition lock cylinder andd housing in which through a magnetic field cause the vehicle's computer to sense the rotation of the ignition lock in order for the engine to start.
If there is a problem where the rotation can't be sensed or some other problem, the engine will crank, but will not start. This system does not interupt the starter and only the injector pulse of the fuel.

Secondly, I have never heard of anything so ridiculous as to have to fill the tank everytime it gets as low as half a tank. Someone is giving you bad infor and this has nothing to do with the factory anti-theft system. One guess would be a fuel pump loosing it's prime after sitting and I have seen this if the vehicle sat overnight. The gas tank would have to be dropped and the fuel pump changed. This is only a guess because I am not looking at the car.

I don't understand what you are saying about being locked out of the car. The door locking system has nothing to do with the factory theft deterrent. Are you speaking of the keyless entry remote transmitters not working?

As far as reprograming PASSLOCK the only time it would need to be reprogrammed is replacement of the lock cylinder, not the keys. These are normal everyday key blanks. There is no computer chip in them. Reprogramming after changing a lock cylinder replacement goes as follows: Turn the ignition to ON and leave for 10 minutes. Turn off and back on for another 10 minutes. Repeat the procedure one more time and the lock cylinder is coded.

It sounds to me as though you need to take it to a dealer where the tech does some decent diagnostic work for you.

From what you have told me so far, I see nothing to lead me to believe the problem is in the PASSLOCK system.

Good luck.

Rob
