Auto Theft Prevention/Is factory alarm on 97 Ford Explorer causing
Expert: INSTALLSUPPORT - 11/7/2007
QuestionQUESTION: I have a 1997 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4X4 with starting problems. Over the last few years it's happened numerous times, but always starts later (AAA membership gets a tow home and the car usually starts right up by the time the tow truck gets me there). This time (luckily in the driveway) it still won't start after 3 days of trying. Your answers to other's questions has me fairly convinced the anti-theft feature is the culprit. But I would appreciate some info more specific to my model.
Where is the valet/overdrive button on my model? Will I be able to start the car by using it?
Also, could you tell me which anti-theft system I have, and instruct me on disarming the system completely. Or, if you have another suggestion, I'd really appreciate it!!!
ANSWER: Jim,
Is it: Headlights flashing, car horn honking
and a worded SECURITY" light in the dash flashing?
(doubtfull since none of the notes show this
car as having a factory alarm system)=FACTORY
Or,
is it: flashing parking lights,
an LED in the dash area, and a siren
going off?= AFTER MARKET
Let me know more on this to better
advise you on a course of action
to take.

QUESTION: It is definitely headlights flashing, car horn honking and the word "THEFT" flashing on the dash. Based on what you said, it seems to be FACTORY.
AnswerOkee dokee then.
Ok, if it's the OEM alarm
malfunctioning now,
(car horn blarring and head lights flashing)
odds are, it will again.
Get out some basic install tools or get
a friend or a good technician
in there to do this.
Normally, you would insert the key in
the drivers door, turn left, then right
to disarm and reset it. If yours is malfunctioning,
you can disable it for good by doing the following:
The FACTORY ALARM DISARM WIRE IS
dk. green/purple |- negative polarity|
at the harness coming out of the door
in the driver's side kick panel.
Once Located, splice into this wire with
a simular guage wire, and put it to
a solid chassis ground. This terminates
the OEM alarm functions entirely.
However, at this point, this car would be exceedingly
easy to steel, so I suggest you get an aftermarket
alarm system to protect it from here on in.
Have a good day.
