hi! your resume is very impressive!! i just needed to ask this..what do you feel is the best anti-theft device out; and what do you think you would call the second best? i have a viper alarm system and anti theft bar on the steering wheel at the moment..any suggestions for an upgrade? thank you!

Thank you for your comment about my work history, but it is very old and does not reflect the level I have attained in the field. I have been meaning to upgrade it and now that you have reminded me I will.
Alarms are only as good as the install. Unfortunately it is getting more difficult to find a quality installation. This is partially because the installers commonly don't have a clue as to the real methods of theft or they take no pride in what they do. There are exceptions, but they are rare.
The very first thing I can think of is the installer that mounts the valet (alarm disable) directly under the dash. Duh...... Once the column is defeated in any type of manner and the ignition is on (idiot lights illuminated) a simple flip of that easy to find switch shuts it all off!! I recently as one of these bozos why they would mount the valet switch in an easy to find location? His answer was that it is convenient for the owner. What you have done with this type of installation is just thrown all your money out the door and your security effectiveness is a joke! The sad thing is, the shop I talked to does most of the installations for the new car dealers in my area.
Another problem that I see is that it appears to be too much work to hide the alarm module and protect the connections. I have seen these modules hanging loose under the dash, velcroed, taped and all sorts of shoddy installations. These vehicle I am referring to were stolen with the alarms installed! I personally think there is a definate consumer fraud issue here if some motivated attorney wanted to get involved. I could guide the attorney in a number of directions. Bottom line, your paying for something your not getting.
If remote start is installed on a transponder system (in layman's terms a chip in an ignition key)a properly cut and coded key MUST NOT be left in the vehicle.
Now, I can sit back and complain, but in order to do this I feel I must have solutions also.
I offer training on these installs for alarm installers. In a case such as yours, you need to make sure the valet switch is difficult to locate. You need to look under the dash and see if the alarm module is accessible. If so you must mount it in such a way that it cannot be easily pulled down and disconnected. As stated, if disconnected, thats the end of all the security functions.
The brand is not that important, besides Directed Electronics has bought out a good share of its competitors when they went into bankruptcy.
I do not like steering wheel locking bars. Yeah, you can use one for a weapon or it can be used on you! Thieves very commonly cut steering wheels these days. The locking bar IS NOT a good deterrent!
If you have an alarm that has been installed properly, that is about all you can do. Another option is a paging alarm that will notify you if your siren has been triggered. There is only so much you can do. There are far too many things out there that don't work (klike locking steering wheel bars). If a thief wants your car, you are not going to stop him. If the alarm is installed properly, it will take him more time.
