Auto Theft Prevention/soft top alrms

Question
Hi, I have a VW Golf 1982 ragtop and wish to make it as "undesirable as possible"
It has an alarm Uniden vs 250 xr, no radio and the speakers have been taken out.
The soft top is said to be "eye watering" to replace.
I have read that it is best to leave the alarm on and the doors unlocked (cheaper to replace what was taken than repair the top as this is the most likely way of entry.
I wish to install a microwave 2-stage unit when I can afford one.

Do you have any advice, tips on discouraging trouble?
Also which alarms are the better/best for a covertable.

thanks for your time
Regards Bruce

Answer
Hello Bruce,

I cannot tell you to leave the doors unlocked to prevent damage from other means of getting inside the vehicle. I can tell you I don't lock my doors. I do not want my glass broken or my lock knocked out. If the door is opened on my vehicles the siren is triggered as well as the pger. This give me the opportunity to meet these fine upstanding citizens that have just broken into my vehicle. I then can introduce myself.
Now, I cannot make an absolute statement saying no one would want you 1982 Golf, but the type of vehicle and condition does make it less prone to theft and break in than other vehicles.
There is no reliable way of protecting the contents of a convertible. Yes, micro wave (perimeter) sensors are used, but here is your next worry: When the alarm falses enough to upset your neighbor, it is possible he will disable your alarm totally!
I will never forget about the Clifford unit that kept going off. The neigbor finally had enough, went outside to the vehicle, ripped the alarm module out from under the dash and beat it with a baseball bat until there was nothing left!
I would suggest leaving your Golf just the way it is.
