Question
William,

I am restoring an early panhead (harley) both the front and rear fenders are in need of repairs. I am interested in having repair work done in lead. Can u steer me in the direction of qualified repairman or do u actually do this type of work yourself? I live in Ohio but shipping is not a concern. Any info offer will be very appreciated.

Answer
Harry, in all honesty, I don't have access to lead tools anymore. Lead is a lost art, and the high cost of lead and solder makes finding a shop willing to do it difficult at best. I personally am not willing to spend 100+ dollars on a set of lead tools to break them out once every 5 or 10 years. I have the knowledge, and will always have it- but I really don't see much lead in my future. I mostly do collision repair, and lead work is the realm of specialty restorers and customizers. I used to enjoy lead repair, and I really enjoy knowing I can perform this lost art if I really feel like it, but it's just not going to happen. I'm far too busy with collision repairs, and that is where I make my living. I was once great at hammering out old cars and hand making repair panels for pretty much everything- but the money just wasn't there for the amountof time it takes me to do it. I just don't have the patience anymore. You might try a body shop in Findlay Ohio called Boutwell collision- he might still be able to do lead, or know someone who does. Bill
