Auto body repair & detailing/Damaged auto door hinges

Question
QUESTION: Is it possible to damage the hinges on a vehicle door by slamming the door shut, hard, one time?  Is there any way doing so could cause over $2,600 in damage to the vehicle?

Thank you.

ANSWER: Hi Ruth,

In normal circumstances I would say no that slamming a vehicle door one time should not cause that type of damage. I suppose if the hinges weren't properly aligned that slamming the door could cause damage to the paint on or around the door that could result in an expensive repair. Believe it or not it doesn't take much damage to be very expensive when dealing with auto body repair.

QUESTION: I have a friend who is being sued for these damages.  How can we get information similar to your opinion or on door hinge regulations so that we can fight this suit?

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Ruth,

I would have no idea how to help you with that. You might see if you can get a technician that works on the type of car that you are dealing with that would be an expert witness. That would be the only suggestion I would have. Good luck with your case.
