4 years ago when i was first introduced to the autobody repair industy i attended a votec college. My instructor who has now moved away and lost contact painted classic mustangs on the side. The two we restored while I worked wth him he shot with ppg paint and clear. The ending finish was remarkable mirror slick with no orange peel straight out of the booth. To this day i can't understand whether or not this is several years of experience and talent or some expert secret. please help to inform me.

There are lots of little secrets to getting that mirror slick finish. I would say that Prep work is probably 80% of it. Gun settings are extremely important as well. Good technique and plain raw talent are also needed. As far as 1 secret that will produce the excellent finish every time, there are none to my knowledge. The only advice I can give you is "Take everything to the extreme". What I mean is go above and beyond what you would do for a daily driver. Wet sand a little longer, use guide coat, and finish out with 800 grit sand paper if you plan to go direct to paint or 400 grit if you plan to use a high quality sealer. Double strain everything you spray, use fine strainers or 3M PPS liner system, use proper solvent and hardener selections is also a must. All the little things is what adds up to the mirror finish.
