Auto body repair & detailing - tape/glue removal

Expert: Bob - 7/30/2009

Question
I put masking tape on my car to hold some plastic up over the window while I had the window repaired. The tape did not come off good and left glue on the paint. What is the best way to clean this off the paint. Thanks!

Answer
Rubbing alcohol first. Goof-off second.

Make sure the area is clean and free of dirt.

Check to make sure that either the alcohol or the goof-off is not harming the paint by putting a little on a q-tip and rubbing the area. You are checking for color or stickiness after the stuff has dried.

Saturate a clean towel and LIGHTLY rub the area. You should be able to see the glue coming off. Do not rub hard because you could scratch the paint.

Follow-up with polish and wax.
