Question

bumper frame
My car was hit in the front. The one thing I have to ask is what the chrome bumper is attached to? It is damaged. I was told it was the upper bumper retainer, but they do not look alike. From what I have found is it the front crossmember support that needs to be replaced. I have seen pictures where it is called the front bumper crossmember, is this the same as the front crossmember?

Answer
Arlen..... you are correct. The front bumpers on nissan suv's and older Toyota Rav's mount directly to the front cross member which is actually a replaceable part of the frame.
Sometimes they are welded on and sometimes bolted on or both.

The terminology is confusing sometimes because the dealer identifies the part description
from there own internal system which varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

For example Toyota calls a side marker lamp a clearance lamp. All the repair guides use side marker
as this is the most common name.

On your Nissan the front cross member is also known as the front auxiliary cross member, bumper mounting bar or reinforcement,or cross member support.
