Auto body repair & detailing/tailgate removal

Question
I have a 1985 F150, and I would like to have a tailgate replaced, the handle does not function and there is a dent on the top, driver side.  With this dent I am not able to lower the tailgate to remove it, I would like to know how to lower the tailgate, so I can remove it?

Answer
Hi Mark;

You need to access the latch assembly from the inside of the tailgate. Since you're replacing the tailgate anyway, you might need to cut a hole in the backside of the tailgate to give you access.  Once inside, you have to manipulate the rods to release the left and right side latch/strikers.  From what you've described, that should do it.  Good luck!
