Question
QUESTION: I just want to know how often I should be replacing my headlamp assembly ('03 Ford Econoline composite lamps). They're about seven years old and it doesn't seem to matter much to what we do with them (relay harness, hi-watt bulbs, lens restoration), the light output and pattern sucks. If you could help me, that would be great, if not, maybe a reference to someone who can?

ANSWER: Saul....... i would suggest that you have the electrical system checked out. If you have replaced components with no results then the problem may be in the power source.

QUESTION: I checked it out myself already and I hooked them up to the battery using relays with some good results, but I just wanted to know how often to replace the headlight assembly. They are kind of yellow and have small cracks in it, but I dont want to spend the $40 to replace them if I dont have to.

Answer
Saul,

If you want a brighter light from the headlamps then replacement would be your best bet.
There is no required time interval for replacement.
If the lens is starting or has yellowed and has small cracks the most cost effective approach would
be to replace them. There are products out in the market to restore the lens however the cost in your case would not be worth it.
