Auto body repair & detailing/Paint peeling on Prius bumper after repair

Question
Our Toyota Prius was in an accident that caused the bumper to need repair & repainting in August of 2008.  In March of this year the paint began peeling and peeled very significantly showing the black bumper in several spots across the bumper.  We returned to the repair shop and they blamed the Toyota bumper, but repainted it again free of charge.  Now, 3 months later it is beginning to peel again, showing the silver of the prior paint this time.  The shop says it is the plastic in the bumper and says they can not guarantee this won't continue to happen.  They said they will take another look at it in a month (why wait?), and are now being very gruff and rude with us.  I just want to know if this is normal?  We spent $500 of our own money, and our insurance covered the rest.  I read previous questions posted and understand that Toyota uses a releasing agent on the bumper that may affect the paint, but isn't that something a professional should be able to deal with?  Or will we be stuck with a forever peeling bumper?

Answer
Hello Tracy

Well, well, well, what a spot to be in.

The first thing is, the shop has messed up. Your insurance company needs to know this problem has occurred, especially if they paid the shop some money for this mess.  The insurance company needs to be aware that the shop is not guaranteeing their work.

You need to 'some how' hold these guys accountable for their actions.
A certified, professional refinisher knows plastics, both OEM as well as aftermarket, and the tedious steps involved in refinishing bumpers and guaranteeing their work.

I could go through all the steps and variables involved in painting plastic bumpers but it would take too long and probably be boring for you.

Your next step should be to involve your insurance company in unraveling this mess and in helping you identify accountability.

Good Luck!  let me know how it works out.
