Auto body repair & detailing/Emblem removal

Hi Dave,

I need to replace the "SEL" emblem on the trunk lid of my 07' Ford Edge. What is the easiest way to get the old emblem off? Thanks for your time.

Hi Rennie!....The most effective way to remove any nameplate or emblem, is to pre-heat it....Especially on a vehicle this new, as nameplates and emblems will be installed using a 2 sided adhesive tape....A standard heat gun is the first choice, but if one is not available, you can simply use a hair dryer....(If either are not available, you can do this cold, as it will just take a little more effort).... Heating the emblem will soften the adhesive tape used to install it, therefore making it easier to remove....Once you have heated it, simply take an Autobody filler spreader, and slip it between the emblem and the painted surface....You can now just virtually scrape it off....A putty knife will do the trick as well, but a plastic one will lessen the chance of damaging the painted surface....An old credit card will work as well....Once you have removed it, you will need to remove the existing tape residue....To do this, I would suggest using an adhesive remover....These can be purchased at any local Auto/Autobody supply store....Apply it to the existing tape, let it soak in, and wipe away any residue....When you are ready to install the new emblem, I would recommend that you clean the surface before you install the new emblem....Alcohol pads from a first aid kit work very well....Drop me a line if you have any further questions...Thanks....Dave....You are very welcome
