Question
On a  1982 Datsun 280Z,  involved in a light collision the firbreglass is cracked around the headlamps on both sides, one crack on each side. Would you have to take the panel off the car to repair it. You talk about the fibreglass  cloth. Is this where it comes in?

Answer
Before attempting this repair, try to locate a new or good used panel. This will make a far better repair. If the cracks are pretty small, and there is no structural damage such as broken tabs, the cracks may be repaired with a specialty filler like Duraglass, or any other waterproof, fiberglass strand reinforced filler. The crack should have a hole drilled a half inch beyond it's visible end, then the crack needs ground out. Then heavily cove the fiberglass on either side of the area where the crack was. Thoughorally blow out all the dust, and fill the area with duraglass. If you like, further reinforcement of the area can be gained by putting a strip of repair mesh in the coved area before filling. I'm talking about the type they use for plaster repair, but NOT THE PAPER TYPE. Fiberglass gel and cloth is tricky to work with, and its a real mess. Only repair this panel if you can't find another. You will be much happier with the finished product, and it will last and look far better. Bill
