Question
Hi Guy, Have a Triumph TR4 that was undercoated with ziebart and the inside fenders by engine was also done and a little overspray on inside of hood as I want to paint car would als like to detail engine bay. Now the question is there a process or chemical to get this material off of paint? One bodyman told me to get a heat gun and plenty of scrapers,hell I,m 57 I,d be dead before I finished. Please tell me there is a better way Thank You Jim V
Hello Jim! There is no easy way to remove undercoat. If the vehicle color is not white or silver, you can try to soften it up with some oven cleaner. (Oven cleaner will stain light colored paints yellow.) I won't promise you results, however. If it is old and hardened up, heating with a propane torch and removing with a wire brush is about the only way I know to get it off. The problem is the thickness of the stuff. If it's newer, and not all dried out, the oven cleaner will go after it, but it will still be a long, messy, smelly ordeal. It would be nice if there were chemicals you could spray on to sand things, buff things, and remove unwanted additions to cars, but most of the time, it's all blood, sweat, and tears, my friend. Good luck to you. Try the torch and the wire brush, just don't overheat the undercoat. It has a certain point where it comes off nicely without turning into burning, molten tar. | Comment | Thanks William, after 20 some years of doing body restore if you never came across a better way there isn,t one, to bad our country let,s people invent stuff but we have no way of disposing of materials (styrofoam peanuts) I hate when I get car parts from dist. loaded with the stuff, whats wrong with paper padding! Thanks again William also ziebart is old was put on 1967 on a TR4 and they never spared the tar, car is white and under tar where I did scrape is perfect white so it did it,s job, but why they put it on inner fenders and front valance is beyond me! Thanks again for your wisdom you put me at ease now if some chemist can come up with a solution that won,t hurt our environment i,m in line for the product. Jim V | ||
