i recently bought a 2006 chevy hhr and a friend suggested that i get a clear coat over the factory paintjob.
what do you suggest?

Adding additional clear will not offer any more protection from the elements.Not to mention it would be very costly to do right[3 to 5 thousand dollar range].If you keep the car covered when not in use and keep it clean and waxed the factory finish will last a long time.
