Question
I recently had my black 96 Corvette repainted.  I am not too proud, but will do best I can with it.  He left compound dust all over it.  What would be the best thing to wash it with, and should I wait about waxing it?  I do not have to drive it.  It is under carport,  I have a car cover for it.  Lost.

Answer
Hi Angie,

Nice pick on the car...Vettes are my favorite!

First let me say that this is a question that I don't mind answering...at all...but you should be asking the person that did the paint job. I say this because I have no idea of what kind of material he used, what his warranty stipulates, etc..

On MOST of today's automotive paints, nearly any liquid car wash detergent is fine once the paint is dry. Just about any of the newer car parts stores (Autozone, etc.) will have a selection of them. If possible, look for one that says "Body Shop Safe". Don't use dishwashing detergent. Hand washing is always best, especially for the first month or so.

You should hold off on any waxing for 90 days or so. The paint is still curing right now, and releasing solvents. If you put too good of a coat of wax on it it might block the solvents from escaping and cause the paint to bubble.

I really hope this help you out. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

Have a good day and enjoy the 'Vette!

Expertise

I can answer just about any questions relating to the collision repair industry. Ask anything you wish about the repair and refinishing processes, business management, employment prospects, training, etc. I'm relatively young (31), so I don't know a heck of a lot about the older repair methods such as lead work, etc. If you're really in a bind, let me know, my resources in this field are virtually limitless.

Experience

I have 13 years of experience working in indepenent and dealership repair facilities, 6 years working as a technician / painter, and 7 years in shop management. I also teach Damage Analysis at a local college.
