would you happen to know how to insert an excel drawing material list into my drawing at the correct scale to match the text in the drawing?

What version of Autocad are you running?  There's a Tables command in the newer releases that you can use to work with Excel spreadsheets and do exactly what you're trying to do.  Otherwise, there are a few 3rd party vendors that offer programs that will make the transition painless.  

I think in 2007 the table command really took off and in 2008 it was improved upon some more.
