Question

I am a recent graduate and currently working at my first job  as a draftsman.

I HAVE ENCOUNTERED TWO PROBLEMS WITH AUTO CAD 2002.  FIRST, WHEN I DOUBLE CLICK ON AN OBJECT IN MY DRAWING(S) TO SWITCH TO ANOTHER LAYER IT DOES NOT WANT TO CHANGE TO THAT LAYER.  I HAVE TO GO TO PROPERTIES TO SWITCH THE WHOLE LAYER.  WHICH TAKES TIME.  SECOND, WHEN I DOUBLE CLICK ON A TEXT THE DIALOG BOX DOES NOT APPEAR.  IS THERE A COMMAND THAT I AM SIMPLY MISSING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM?

Answer
HI

1-- I hope you are using that OLDIE as plain AutoCAD. ADT (now ACA) has had 3/4 of its progress since that release. Your boss might not be able to afford the upgrade, or might not understand how different the new ones are. Plain AutoCAD was pretty refined by then, but ADT was almost unchanged from its first release.

2-- I have no idea why you would DC on something to change layers --- unless you wanted to open the properties box to do so. Maybe you had some customization someplace else you did work. Of course, when you use ADT objects, they are created on the proper layer.
Use MATCHPROPS to change layers, if you have other objects onscreen the the wanted layer --- that is fastest for me.

3-- Sorry, I dont have any AutoCADs prior to 2006 installed.  If you look in HELP under text edit, and poke around, you should find a system variable to change (for instance 1 to open dialog, 2 to change on the command line, etc --- sorry I dont remember right now.) If you cant find it, write back and I will look it up in a book.

Good luck

BOB
