AutoCAD/Preserve layers after using purge command

Question
Hello

I have a query related to preserving layers in a dwg. the typical procedure is like this -

1) I have a dwg which has about 10 layers with multiple blocks on it (~ 100,000)which is brought in through a dxf.

2) Many times this dxf changes and has to be bought in several times.

3) When I delete the old dwg (to bring in the new dxf) I have to use the 'PURGE' command so that it does not bring up those weird blocks on different layers.

4) As soon as I purge, the layers also get deleted, quite obviously since there are no objects on it. But I have 10 layout tabs each showing 1 of those 10 layers.

5) Now I have to use 'VPLAYER' to adjust the displays on each viewport on each layout tab.

Q - Is there some way that when I use purge ( I HAVE TO use purge command) the layers wont be deleted so that when I bring in the new dwg I don't have to go to each layout tab and adjust the viewport layer settings?

Thanks in advance!

I happened to be on my computer, so, I am able to quickly answer your question:

You can use this format:
-insert
[block name]=x:/[directory name]/[directory name]/[directory name]/[block name]

Notice the equal sign:  (=)
If the drawing file is in your working folder or the Support File Search Path, then the path information is not necessary.

Let me know how this works for you.  If you don't understand, write back and say so with a follow-up of this question.

Expertise

I can address all 2-D questions and some 3-D questions. I do programming in AutoLISP if it doesn`t involve solid modeling. I can also address menu customization issues and can help you find answers to questions I can`t answer by taking your question directly to Autodesk via their newsgroups.

Experience

I used to do electronic and mechanical design for a flat panel monitor manufacturer, and now I do architectural drafting for an architect. I did and do AutoLISP and menu customization and take pride in making my lisp routines to do the work exactly the way the client likes them done.

Publications
I had a routine published in CADENCE magazine (no longer in publication and taken over by CADALYST). Some of my routines are published on my website at http://my.sterling.net/~bdeshawn
