Question
QUESTION: I am using Autocad2008 Electrical. I have installed all the symbol libraries. But when I want to insert a component I am only shown the symbols (for example 2 pole circuit breaker) according to the JIC standard. How can I select and insert in the drawing a symbol from  another standard for example IEC? Can I change the default library from JIC standard to IEC standard. That is when I select the Insert Component or Componet button the IEC standard symbols are show.

ANSWER: Pat Murnen from Autodesk Discussion Groups says:
When you install the software you choose which default standard but when you choose your libraries to install you can install as many as you want. Then for each project you define whether it is JIC or IEC by selecting the Component Tagging options (can be applied to each drawing as this is a drawing setting) and defining which library to use, i.e. JIC or IEC.

I hope this helps

QUESTION: First of all thanks a lot for your quick reply. I tried to do it but failed. I selected Component Tagging but did not manage to find where I can pick IEC. If it's not a problem can you walk me through the steps please.

The project points to a particular library folder or series of folders. To
define this:
1. right-click on the project name in Project Manager
2. select Properties
3. select the Project Settings tab
4. expand the Schematic Libraries section
5. remove any folder names you do not want, for example, the c:\program
files....\jic125 and add the ones you want, for example, c:\program
files\....\iec2.  The order the paths are listed are the order that AcadE
will search for a symbol on insertion. Use the buttons at the right to
Delete, Add, Browse.

To select IEC style tagging. This can be done on a per-drawing basis or as a
proejct setting. If done as a project setting it must be applied to each
drawing as shown below. Remember, when Project Settings are applied to
drawings, it is all settings not just specific ones.
1. right-click on the project name in Project Manager
2. select Properties
3. Select the Components tab.
4. In the Component TAG Options section, select Combined
Installation/Location tag mode. Select any sub-options below it depending on
your preferred format for tagging.
5. OK
6. Highlight the drawings in Project Manager you wish to apply the project
settings to.
7. Right-click and select Properties -> Apply Project Defaults.

To apply on a per-drawing basis
1. Open the drawing
2. Select Projects -> Drawing Properties
3. Select the Components tab.
4. In the Component TAG Options section, select Combined
Installation/Location tag mode. Select any sub-options below it depending on
your preferred format for tagging.
5. OK

Hope this helps,
Pat Murnen

Expertise

I can address all 2-D questions and some 3-D questions. I do programming in AutoLISP if it doesn`t involve solid modeling. I can also address menu customization issues and can help you find answers to questions I can`t answer by taking your question directly to Autodesk via their newsgroups.

Experience

I used to do electronic and mechanical design for a flat panel monitor manufacturer, and now I do architectural drafting for an architect. I did and do AutoLISP and menu customization and take pride in making my lisp routines to do the work exactly the way the client likes them done.

Publications
I had a routine published in CADENCE magazine (no longer in publication and taken over by CADALYST). Some of my routines are published on my website at http://my.sterling.net/~bdeshawn
