About Bill DeShawn
Expertise
I can address all 2-D questions and some 3-D questions. I do programming in AutoLISP if it doesn`t involve solid modeling. I can also address menu customization issues and can help you find answers to questions I can`t answer by taking your question directly to Autodesk via their newsgroups.

Experience
I used to do electronic and mechanical design for a flat panel monitor manufacturer, and now I do architectural drafting for an architect. I did and do AutoLISP and menu customization and take pride in making my lisp routines to do the work exactly the way the client likes them done.

Publications
I had a routine published in CADENCE magazine (no longer in publication and taken over by CADALYST). Some of my routines are published on my website at http://my.sterling.net/~bdeshawn

AutoCAD - plot styles

Question
QUESTION: Hi,

I am enduring the headache of trying to reconfigure everything in my computer after a virus forced me to do a clean install of my operating system. So, among other things, I am trying to use my old plot styles, which I had backed up. But I can't seem to get it to show in the dropdown menu as an option. A bit of detective work revealed that ONLY .ctb plot styles are available, but I can't get any .stb plot styles to show. Any ideas? I have chosen it as the default plot style from the Tools> Options> Plot & Publish window. I have restarted my computer. I have crossed my fingers. Nothing. THANKS!!!

ANSWER: I think you should try the CONVERTPSTYLES command.  Then your stb files will appear in the plot styles table selection.

That oughta do it!

QUESTION: Hi and thanks for your reply! So, I tried all of your advice. Here is what happened:

> Typed "CONVERTPSTYLES" > Enter

> This message appeared: "This command converts a Color Dependent plot style drawing to use Named plot styles.

You should convert your color dependent plot style tables (.CTB files) to Named plot style tables (.STB) with CONVERTCTB before you convert your drawing."

> If I type "CONVERTCTB", the only choice given is a plot style I never use.

> If I click OK, then two plot styles appear. One is the plot style I am trying to convert (called Money Man).

> However, if I select the file, this message appears: "Monkey Man.stb does not contain a color mapping table and cannot be used to convert drawings. Select a different named plot style.

Sooooo, I don't know. Basically, before my 'clean install' headache, I somehow had it set up where I could choose "Monkey Man" from the dropdown menu in the plot dialog box. I did save my Monkey Man plot style to an external hard drive before the clean install, and I checked the file path, so I am not sure why it's not working. Thanks again for your help!!!!!

ANSWER: I've got the solution:

Since I use ctb files, I converted one to stb and it has color mapping in it.  So download this:
http://my.sterling.net/~bdeshawn/CHP2K.stb

Put that in your STYLESMANAGER folder.  When it asks for a stb file, pick it.  The next time you want to select an STB file in that drawing, you will see ALL your stb files.  Then you can select the one you really want.

You would think that this would do the job:
Tools;Options;Plot and Publish;Plot Style Table Settings;Use Named Plot Styles;

But it doesn't do anything.  I still see nothing but ctb files.  It makes no sense.  Even after I selected the option and started a new drawing with no template.  I even tried exiting AutoCAD and returning.  It still didn't work.  Then I checked my options again and it was still set for named plot styles.  So, the ctb file for which I sent you the URL should get you into named plot styles mode.

QUESTION: Almost there. Thanks for all your help. I downloaded your plot style and put in the folder along with my plot style. But I'm still stuck on getting it "into" the drop-down menu from the Plot Dialog Window. When you say, "When it asks for a stb file, pick it". I still only have the choices of "New" or "None". How would adding another stb file help AutoCAD recognize mine?

Answer
Remember when you used the CONVERTPSTYLES command and you were asked to select an STB file, you selected one and AutoCAD didn't like it?  Well, AutoCAD will like the STB file that you downloaded.  After you select it, when you plot, you will be able to see the STB files so can select the one you really want.
